What is the credit card APR? APR stands for Annual Percentage Rate, and it is perhaps the most important attribute of a credit card if you are planning on carrying a significant balance over a longer period of time. In simple terms, the amount of interest you must pay on your credit card balance depends on its APR. Generally, the lower the APR the better for you, because it means you pay less interest. APR can either be "fixed" or "variable". Fixed APR cards usually have a bit higher interest rate, but you'll know exactly how much interest you will be charged at the end of each month. A card, with variable or floating rate, will have a fluctuating interest rate, based on an index (the "Prime" or the "LIBOR" rate) plus a variable. Most variable rate cards use the "Prime" index and it is published in the Wall Street Journal. The Prime Rate doesn't change too frequently, but one never knows when they change it, and in what direction.
